Freda (Swinford) Solomon

Freda Swinford Solomon, 99, of Manilla, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Ashford Place Health Campus.
Born March 27, 1920 on her family's farm in Washington Township, Shelby County, she was the daughter of Fred and
Alta (Ropp) Swinford. She married Horace "Hoot" Solomon on March 27, 1940 and lived on the family 
farm until she fell in September 2012. 
She is survived by her son Gerald Solomon and his wife Joanne of Indianapolis, and many nieces and 
nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Diane Solomon, two sisters Esther Swinford, 
Wilma Mitchell, and brother Joe Swinford.
Freda graduated from Flat Rock High School in 1938.  She went to work at the Shelbyville Garment Factory until 1942
when she struck a cow on her way home from work.  She then continued to work on the farm, working the fields,
driving the tractor and other equipment, and taking care of the animals.
Mrs. Solomon  was a member of Landmarks, AARP, Big Flat Rock Christian Church, Farm Bureau, and the Merry Martha
Homemakers Club.  For 10 years she volunteered at Major Hospital in Shelbyville.
Freda enjoyed attending church services, visiting friends and neighbors, and was a loyal friend of Indiana 
University.  She loved gardening, attending family reunions, and keeping up with family genealogy.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home,
437 Amos Road, with Pastor Lynne Krider officiating.  Visitation will be observed on Wednesday from 12:00 noon
until the time of the service.  Graveside rites will be held at the Hurst Cemetery in Rush County.
The family would like to thank Ashford Place Health Campus and OUR Hospice of South Central Indiana for all
the care that she received.
