Robert “Bob” A. Myers, 91, of Shelbyville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Homeview Health & Rehab in Franklin, surrounded by his family.
Born in Shelbyville September 4, 1927, to Walter “Cap” and Ione (Firsich) Myers, Bob enlisted in the Navy immediately after graduating from Shelbyville High School. He shipped out shortly before the end of World War II .
He returned from the service to attend Indiana University where he graduated with a degree in business. There he met Mary Gilich and proposed two weeks later—a proposal she suggested he repeat at a later date. He did, she said yes, they married in 1952, and spent the last 67 years happily together.
Bob was a meat cutter and entrepreneur. After a few years working at grocery stores, in 1957 Bob opened his own store in Waldron Indiana. Eventually he moved the butchershop to St. Paul and founded Myers Frozen Food, selling sausages, steaks and more. The company is still family owned and operated and still doing things the way Bob did—simple, right, and second to none.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Shelbyville, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and a Lifetime member of the Antique Airplane Association.
Bob is preceded in death by his sisters Kathryn Craig and Jean Dorsey and brothers Frank and Richard.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son Tony (Sheila) of Shelbyville; daughter Mary Ann Meyers (Phil) of Avon; son, Mike (Sharon) of Shelbyville; daughter Teresa Cepican (Tom) of Westfield, son Bobby (Jean Ann) of Indianapolis, daughter Gloria of Indianapolis; his sister, Virginia Crail of Buena Park, California; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grand children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St., with Rev. Mike Keucher officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be observed on Tuesday afternoon, July 16, 2019 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road.
