Russell A. "Russ" Hamner, Jr., 94, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, May 3, 2019 at
Ashford Place Health Campus.
Born March 28, 1925 in Shelby County, Russ was the son of Russell A. Hamner, Sr., and
Gladys (Reed) Hamner. He married Georgia (Slusher) Hamner on July 4, 1945, and she
preceded him on July 8, 1998.
Survivors include 3 children- Debbie Mohr (husband Kit) of Shelby County, Barbara Hamel
(husband Brad) of Indianapolis, Rusty Hamner (wife Jenny) of Flat Rock; 5 grandchildren-
Jason Mohr, Megan Schornick, Evan Hamel, Levi Hamner, Noah Hamner; and 6 great
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, spouse, daughter Kathleen Hamner,
and a brother John Hamner.
Mr. Hamner was a lifelong resident of this area and graduated from Flat Rock High School.
He had been employed as a bus driver for Trailways Bus Lines for several years, and after
that had been general foreman at Michigan-Wisconsin Pipe Line in Marietta for 27 years,
retiring in 1982. He was a member of Flat Rock Christian Church, Norristown Farmer's
Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, American Legion Post #70, Murat Shrine of Indianpolis, and
Flat Rock Citizen's Committee. He was a WWII US Navy veteran.
Russ enjoyed working with the American Legion Memorial Honor Guard, being involved in
church and Legion activities, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was
priveliged to take part in the Honor Flight Program to Washigton D.C., honoring military
service veterans.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Flat Rock Christian Church, 2854 W. Pope St.
Flat Rock, Indiana with Pastor Brian Ebersole officiating. Visitation will be at 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm
on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 and at 10:00 am until the time of the service on Thursday
morning at the church.
A Masonic service will be on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm at the church, and
a graveside military service will be conducted by local veterans organization, of which
Russ was a part of for many years.
Memorial contributions can be made to OUR Hospice of South Central Indiana, or the
Flat Rock Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.
