Joe Crosby Obituary


Joe J. Crosby, 84, of Shelbyville, Indiana, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021.
Born on January 7, 1937 in Shelbyville, to Carl Crosby and Bessie (Brattain) Crosby. He 
married the love of his life, Beverly S. Cole on December 22, 1957, at the First Presbyterian Church in Shelbyville by the Reverend Roscoe Wolvington. 
Joe graduated in 1956 from Shelbyville High School and the Indiana Barber College in 1961.  He also served
his country in the United States Navy from 1956 - 1960 while stationed in Charleston, South Carolina aboard
the USS 431 Dominant minesweeper. He was named Company Honor Man in boot camp. Joe was also a starting 
guard on the Navy Minemen Basketball team. Later in life he became a teaching instructor and maintenance 
director at Shelbyville Central Schools and Blue River Vocational Schools for 16 years, retiring in 1999. In 
addition, he began barbering and started Joe Crosby's Barber Shop in 1961, which he owned until he retired
in 2020. He was also a former member of the Eagles, Elks, and current member of the American Legion Post # 70 
and Indiana Retired Teachers Association. Joe enjoyed golfing with his son and brothers in law, yardwork and camping, however he gained the most enjoyment from watching his grandkids who affectionately gave him the names "Tapaw", "T-paw", and Grandpa. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beverly; his two children, Leslie (Curt) Carlson of Indianapolis and Craig J. Crosby of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Erica Carlson Smith (Ben) of Dayton, Ohio, Carson J. Crosby;  and Kalynn Crosby of Shelbyville, and Madison Carlson of Indianapolis. Joe is also survived by his sister, Linda (Dick) Wise; and brother, Paul William (Betty) Crosby of Shelbyville. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl and mother, Bessie : brothers Robert Crosby, Thomas Crosby, Jack Crosby; sister, Virginia Crosby Porter; brother- in-law Sgt. William Porter and sister-in-law, Billie Lou Crosby.
Joe wanted to thank his family, friends and neighbors for their love and support over the years.
A Celebration of Joe's life will be held Thursday, September 23, 2021 from 10am to 12:00 pm, immediately followed by a 
Memorial Service and Military Rites at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville.  Pastor
Rob Barlow will officiate his service.  A luncheon at the American Legion Post # 70, 1125 Miller Avenue, Shelbyville will
follow services.  All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Joe's name may be made to the
American Legion Post # 70, Cancer Association of Shelby County, P.O. Box 844, Shelbyville, or your favorite charity.
