Joe Franklin Obituary

Joe E. Franklin, 91, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023 at McKay Manor in Shelbyville.

Joe was born May 28, 1932, in Shelbyville, he was the son of George and Mildred (Farrow) Franklin. He married Lou Ann (Pope) Franklin on November 30, 1962 and she preceded him in death February 13, 2020. 

Survivors include 1 daughter- Vicki Franklin of Shelbyville: 1 granddaughter -Jennessa Franklin-Saylor (wife Dusty) of Ft. Myers, FL; 4 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, spouse and 2 sisters- Lee Metz and Karen Waltz.

Joe was a lifetime resident of this area and graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1950. He worked for Detroit Diesel Allison’s of Indianapolis, retiring after 31 years of service. He and his wife then purchased the family business Pope’s Store in Waldron. After closing the store Joe, liking to stay busy drove part time for Personal Management as a courier and could be found getting his exercise sweeping Mickey’s T Mart parking lot where he also enjoyed chatting with local friends and family.

Joe was a US Air Force Veteran. He attended Waldron United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was a member of American Legion Post #70, and Eagles Lodge #766. Joe had a wonderful sense of humor that he enjoyed sharing with everyone. He will be missed for his funny conversations, comments and sayings. His biggest joy was anything “Jennessa”.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 1:00-3:00 pm, at the American Legion Post #70,1125 Miller Avenue, Shelbyville, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post #70, or Main Street Hospice, 10 Highland Avenue, Franklin, IN 46131.
