Raymond Scheffler Obituary

Raymond Scheffler, 101, died June 19, 2022, in Columbus, Indiana.  He was born on February 24, 1921, in Shelby County, Indiana to Harry Scheffler and Bernice Fox Scheffler.

He is survived by his children,  Vicky Goode (Reelsville, IN), Raymond Scheffler Jr. (Valrico, FL), Ellen Scheffler (Columbus, IN) and John Scheffler (Columbus, IN), 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Jean, his wife of 75 years, and his brother Frank.

After graduating from Shelbyville High School in 1939, he pursued a career managing flour mills and grain elevators.   He was called to active duty in the Army Air Corps in January, 1943 and was a B-24 pilot.  While stationed in Waco, TX, he married the love of his life, Jean Mulligan of Ft. Wayne, IN.  After completing his pilot training, he was assigned to the 13th Air Force, 307th Bomb Group, 370th Bomb Squadron in the South Pacific.  In addition to completing 51 combat missions, he was a combat flight instructor and checked out new crews arriving in the combat theater of operation.

After WWII, Raymond returned to Ft. Wayne with his wife to work and start a family.   In 1953, Raymond brought his family back to Shelby County and farmed for over 40 years.  In 1982, he retired as a Lt. Colonel from the US Air Force Reserves.
Raymond took great pride in his family, his military service for our country, and his career as a farmer.  Raymond was an amateur radio operator (K9GKZ) and a member of the Air Force Military Auxiliary Radio System which provides phone patches for military personnel around the world.  He was also a member of the Blue River Valley Amateur Radio Society, the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Scottish Rite, and York Rite.  He had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel, visiting all 50 states and several foreign countries.  He was also an avid dog-lover and enjoyed drives along the Ohio River.

Lt. Colonel Scheffler has made his final flight to his eternal home.  Life’s mission complete.
