Obituary

Richard M. Benson, 94, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Heritage House.

Born January 3, 1929 in Indianapolis, he was the son of John Wesley Benson and Mary Esther (Frost) Benson. He married Evelyn (Williams) Benson on April 2, 1955 and she survives.

Other survivors include daughter- Valeria Jorgensen of Shelbyville, brother- John Wesley Benson, Jr of Michigan; sisters- Katherine Tressler (John) of Fairland, and Ruby Jane Spaulding of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Jane Reed, and brother William E. Benson.

Mr. Benson was a lifetime resident of this area and graduated from Waldron High School. Richard was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon for many years and was a US Navy veteran. He was employed with Reed Construction from 1954-1963, was owner/operator of Benson Construction from 1963-1976, and was owner/manager of R & E Rentals for many years. Richard loved to read, talk politics, and work in his yard.

Private graveside services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion.
