William Ray "Bill" Coffey, 73, of Shelbyville, passed away peacefully at his home on August 9, 2023.
Born on August 6, 1950, in Shelbyville, Indiana, Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Bill's family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his loving wife, Loretta (Henson) Coffey, and their children: Michelle Ensminger husband Heath, Nic Coffey wife Alyson, and Samantha Evans husband James. Bill was a proud grandfather to Nicole, Ethan, Hannah, Emma, and Sienna.
Bill was a kind, generous and funny individual who was down to earth and never met a stranger. Bill was a great storyteller and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Bill attended Centerville High School and furthered his education at Connersville Vocational School. In 1970 he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Vietnam, demonstrating his dedication to his country. He became an accomplished auto mechanic, working for various car dealerships and even owning his own business, Bill's Car Care, in the 1980s. He retired from the City of Shelbyville after 18 years, where he worked in maintenance at the airport and served as the Supervisor of the Shelbyville Parks & Recreation Department.
Bill loved to cook, fish, and travel. Bill's passion for photography led him to earning the nickname "Poppyrazzi." He even won several ribbons in 4-H photography exhibits.
Bill was a member of Town & Country Christian Church and also attended Crossroad Community Church. He saw his mission field as the community in which he lived and worked.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Joan (Thurston) Coffey, his father, Gus Coffey, his brother, Jamie (Jim) Coffey and father and mother in-law John & Agnes Henson. He held a special place in his heart for his grandparents, Walt and Mabel Thurston, as well as several uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Bill's memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and a zest for life. He will be remembered as a devoted family man, a skilled mechanic, and a beloved member of his community. May he rest in peace.
Visitation will be Monday evening, August 14, 2023, from 4:00-8:00pm, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville. Funeral services will be at 11:00am Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at the funeral home, with Pastor Andy Lee officiating. Burial immediately following at Winchester Cemetery. Gravesite military rites will be conducted by the America Legion.
